Fear of failing
Fear of succeeding
Fear of looking in the mirror
And finding that you're the same person that you were yesterday
Or finding that you've changed slightly
Or finding that you're completely different
Fear of standing at the crossroads,
Not knowing which road to take.
The road less travelled?
The road everyone takes?
Turning around and taking the road that got you there?
Make a mad dash into the woods?
Sit down and wait?
Hope vultures don't find you?
Scream?
Fear of looking it in the face,
Not knowing what to do.
Embrace it?
It is a bag of sand, open at both ends.
Ignore it?
It is a mountain in Nebraska.
Accept it?
It tells me wisdom has no value.
Fight it?
It is Goliath, and I, David -
I have not slept in days,
My arms are tied behind my back,
And I have no slingshot.
I can feel it run through my veins,
Poison working its way through me.
It takes control of my mind,
A drug of infinite strength.
Fear of lonliness,
Fear of intimacy.
Fear of the homeless man asking you for a quarter,
Fear of finding yourself in his shoes.
Fear of finding something waiting for you in the shadows,
Fear that there is nothing there.
Fear of death,
Fear of living until tomorrow,
Fear of of seeing your one hundred and fiftieth birthday,
Fear of immortality.
